Thermoplastic coatings are part of our everyday life. They are the thick and resilient coatings you can find on refrigerator shelves or clothes drying racks, but they are far more than that. Axalta offers several ranges of thermoplastic coatings, with a range of performance characteristics.
Whilst a thermoset coating is usually a decorative, thin film coating, thermoplastic coatings are functional coatings with the main following features:
Unlike thermoset coatings, the thermoplastic coating does not require any chemical curing. The melt process of the polymer is the basis of the coating process and is consequently very rapid. The metallic substrate is first preheated, the Abcite is applied and then flows to form a smooth surface. After cooling, the coated pieces are immediately ready to be used.
Depending on your business needs and on the size of the part to be coated there are different processes which may be employed:
Abcite® is a thermoplastic coating providing outstanding protection for metallic surfaces. It is a one layer coating providing excellent corrosion protection, high weathering resistance and enhanced chemical resistance. Abcite is tough, and gives lasting performance in a wide variety of aggressive industrial environments and exterior applications.
Flamulit® products are used for many specific applications as a single layer, offering good mechanical properties, corrosion protection and chemical resistance. Typical uses for Flamulit products are battery boxes, the internal lining of fire extinguishers and the external lining of buried pipelines.
