Thermoplastic powders in Verniciatura Industriale

December 2021

The lecture by Susanna Giovannini, from Ibix di Lugo di Ravenna, on 7 July 2021 in Milan, during the first edition of the P&E Coating Days at the Museum of Science and Technology "Leonardo da Vinci", entitled: "Thermoplastic coatings for outdoor applications: advantages, spraying technologies and focus on corrosion protection", evaluated the technical/qualitative/economic/environmental comparison between the use of thermoplastic powders, applied on sandblasted metal substrates, in one layer, and traditional liquid paints in three layers. (galvanisation - or other anti-corrosion primer - intermediate and finishing) on substrates that are always sandblasted.

Two thermoplastic powders are used, applied by flame, useful to qualitatively improve the duration of protection, compared to traditional cycles, in the anti-corrosion sector, and to confidently meet the requirements of the recent ISO 12944: 2018 standard (25 years durability).

- Abcite® 1060/X60 (ethylene methacrylic acid copolymer)

- Plascoat® PPA 571 (polyolefin copolymer with acrylic acid),

while the liquid cycles are characterised by the classic 3 layers with a durability of ten years without any maintenance.
