Sustainable Operations

Adherence to environmental legislation and regulatory requirements is the starting point of our commitment to minimize our environmental footprint across our business activities, from product development and manufacturing to distribution and waste disposal. Our majority-owned manufacturing facilities around the world are ISO 14001:2015 and RC 14001:2015 certified. All facilities also adhere to Axalta’s own global Environment, Health, and Safety Policy, which includes, and in some instances exceeds, standards set by either ISO or Responsible Care.

Axalta is committed to providing a healthy and safe working environment for our employees. We unveiled our new operating slogan “Driving Perfect Performance” in 2019, where we are striving for perfect safety, quality, and service. We achieved our best-ever safety performance in 2019 with a total recordable incident rate of 0.28, which is top decile in the coatings industry.

Reducing Our Environmental Footprint

Axalta announced a new set of corporate-wide sustainability goals in 2018 to guide our business and performance over the coming years, and we are making progress toward these goals. We have a goal to reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from operations by 5 percent (normalized to production) by year-end 2022 from a baseline year of 2017. The reduction of GHG emissions is primarily achieved through fuel switching and by replacing outdated process equipment and lighting with more efficient technologies. We’ve also set a goal to reduce VOC emissions from operations by 3 percent (normalized to production) by year-end 2022 from a baseline year of 2017. We discuss our approach to reducing our emissions in our annual response to the CDP Climate Change questionnaire.

We are also focused on optimizing our water use at Axalta facilities. We have invested in on-site wastewater treatment facilities for some of our manufacturing sites globally. The on-site treatment allows us to reduce our effluents and waste during manufacturing. The treated water is often recycled back into our operations, reducing the amount of water we withdraw from local municipalities. We are committed to continuous improvement in water management; we set a goal to reduce water use by 10 percent (normalized to production) by year-end 2022 from a baseline year of 2017.

Axalta is committed to following generally accepted waste management practices. We always first try to reuse a product or sell it as a useful product to a third party. After that, we recycle or reclaim, then utilize waste to energy, and finally use incineration, treatment, or another disposal method. The result of this approach is that we are continuously discovering new ways to reuse and divert our materials from the landfill. Our corporate goal is to reduce total waste by 5 percent (normalized to production) by year-end 2022 from a baseline year of 2017.

Product Stewardship

Manufacturing consistently superior quality products demands rigorous standards for the materials we use. At Axalta, product stewardship means:

  • Carefully selecting raw materials that provide the best product performance while minimizing risk to human health and the environment.
  • Designing products to protect the surfaces they cover, promote product lifespan and reduce the demand for additional raw materials.
  • Providing accurate information to maximize the safe use, handling, storage, and distribution of our products.

Through our work to identify and mitigate potential risks associated with our products, from development through manufacturing, use and disposal, we continue to provide value to our customers and ensure the sustainability of our business.

Product Quality

Quality is essential in everything we do. Our major manufacturing sites meet ISO 9001:2015 quality management systems certification, and sites supplying automotive OEMs are also TS/IATF 16949 certified, as established by the International Automotive Task Force. Adherence to common quality standards is the first step in our commitment to quality. Our operations follow additional quality excellence systems that set goals and apply disciplines, which in many cases exceed those set by the quality standards.
