Axalta relies on top talent graduating from universities to sustain our growth and ability to innovate. Outreach begins while students are still in school with a two-pronged approach.
Build a global center of excellence to support recruitment needs across the organization by the end of 2019.
Building Awareness on Campus
Around the world we support university students’ automotive racing teams with both Axalta products and technical know-how. Student racing connects our business with students interested in automotive design and engineering, anticipating their interest in careers aligned with Axalta’s products and services that serve the global automotive industry.
In the United States, Axalta brings our sponsored NASCAR race cars to the campuses of our core recruiting schools, including Texas A&M University, Penn State University and the University of Michigan, to encourage continued student interest in the field and raise awareness of Axalta as an employer of choice in the automotive industry. At these schools, we’ve also supported engineering student racing teams that build their own cars to compete under the auspices of Formula SAE. The academic outreach arm of the international Society of Automotive Engineers, SAE empowers student teams to design and engineer their own cars and compete against other universities’ cars for the safest and best performance on the track. The prototype race cars are evaluated for their potential as production vehicles in real-world applications.
Students in the European Union received Axalta support for their racing programs. In Belgium, the University of Leuven’s Punch Powertrain Solar Team car was painted with Axalta’s Cromax water-based products before it competed in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. The OS.CAR Fachhochschule team from the University of Applied Sciences in Vienna, Austria, painted its internal combustion engine race cars at the Axalta Refinish Training Centre in Oeynhausen, Austria.
Students from five Axalta core recruitment schools in greater Shanghai attended the opening of Axalta’s Asia-Pacific Technology Center in Shanghai and heard from Axalta’s Chairman and CEO, Charlie Shaver, and Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Barry Snyder. Also in Shanghai, Axalta supports Tongji University’s student chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers racing team. Students near our facilities in Tlalnepantla, outside of Mexico City, and Buenos Aires are invited to our campuses to learn more about the coatings industry.
Internships and Careers
Students in the United States are encouraged to apply for internship positions at our facilities in their fields of study. Students who receive internships in our program, which we have branded InventU, are fully engaged throughout their time with us. During weekly We Paint Futures sessions over the course of the summer, students hear from senior executives about their roles at Axalta and the paths their careers took. Midway in the program, all interns travel to Axalta’s Philadelphia corporate headquarters for a three-day Summer Summit colloquium where they meet as a group with other executives and engage in team building exercises. In the past two years, 75 students have come through the program with the percent of eligible participants offered full-time positions increasing.
In Spain, our engagement with the University of Oviedo in Asturias blended student racing with recruitment to provide a long-term source of talent for our growing services center in Asturias that provides careers in finance, supply chain management and information technology among other disciplines. Axalta’s university partnership includes the creation of an Axalta-chaired professorship and support for the university’s efforts to obtain international accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International, which will improve the ranking of the university and thus the quality graduates we can hire.
In China, the Paints the Future internship program offers internships to outstanding university students from four Chinese universities—Shanghai Jiaotong University, East China University of Science and Technology, Tianjin University and Shanghai University of Engineering Science—that major in chemistry, chemical engineering and material science.
