At Axalta, safety, health and wellness is at the core of how we do business, and we are committed to operating safe workplaces. We have a program in place that enables our employees to engage in and commit to improving our health, safety and environmental performance for all our operations.
Our health and safety management system is aligned with our policies and helps track our performance globally. We aim to reduce injuries and ensure that our employees return home safely each day. To enable this, in addition to tracking overall recordable injury rates we began to track life-altering incidents in 2016 at all our facilities as an extension of our Life Saving Rules. We have also set a goal to deploy world-class employee health and safety training to achieve zero site fatalities or life altering incident annually.
Achieve zero site fatalities or life-altering incidents annually by deploying enhanced health and safety training and programs.
Over the past two years, we have worked to incorporate our new acquisitions to our EHS systems to better track health and safety metrics; therefore, our 2017 data includes operational data from two acquisitions. Our recordable rate for employees and contractors increased from 2015 to 2017; we saw an increase in hand injuries from routine tasks. As a result, we increased health and safety training and coaching conducted by our regional EHS managers. Globally, we saw a 38 percent reduction in lost workday rates for employees and a 50 percent reduction in total recordable rates for contractors in 2017 over 2016 performance. Additionally, our global rate has remained at zero for life-altering incidents.
To celebrate EHS achievements, the Axalta Chairman’s Award for Excellence in Action on Environmental, Health and Safety is presented annually to a manufacturing facility that excelled in meeting the company’s EHS standards.
In 2017, the award was given to employees at Axalta’s powder coatings manufacturing center in Hilliard, Ohio. The facility was recognized for operating 1,000 days without an OSHA recordable incident and developing a range of proactive steps to enhance workplace health and safety. An additional award was given to our Riverstone, Australia facility for a significant improvement in their overall scoring from 2016 to 2017.
In 2016, two facilities received the Chairman’s award. Our manufacturing center in Tlalnepantla, Mexico, near Mexico City, won the award for achieving zero recordable injuries for employees and contractors, zero significant incidents and initiatives that also reduced the environmental impact from operations.
Our facility in Changchun, China, was recognized for 815,000 safe hours worked, zero recordable injuries or significant incidents, for significant progress in waste reduction and for the introduction of supplemental EHS-based training programs.
In addition to workplace safety, we are committed to supporting the health and well-being of our employees. Our wellness programs focus on proactive and preventive care for our employees, ensuring a healthier workforce. In the Americas, this includes discounted rates at local fitness centers, tobacco cessation programs, nutritional counseling and addiction counseling. We also offer rehabilitative medicine programs that enable employees who are injured or ill to more readily return to work. In our Europe, Middle East and Africa region, our wellness offerings range from corporate fitness programs to health screenings. This includes weekly health prevention courses, counseling for nutrition and addiction problems, ergonomic workstation evaluations and an annual health prevention information week.
